Preliminary Task

For the Preliminary Task we had to create a short film using the 180 degree rule that invovled a close up and a door. We had to create our short storyline that incorparated these three things.

Doing this task I learnt several things:

  • I learnt how to use the editing software Adobe Premiere Pro which will be an important thing I will need to take forward to the practical.
  • The importance of planning before filming to get a clear idea of what needs to be done and to making the filming process as easy as possible.
  • I learnt the importance of having footage on the main hardrive before starting the editing process
  • I learnt how to use the different equipment such as the Camera, Tripod and Mac's in the correct way which is something that I won't have to encounter when doing the practical.
  • I learnt the importance of teamwork when working in a group when making a film and how it is important to come to quick decisions that every member of the group agrees with.

180° Rule

The 180 degree rule is important when filming as it affects the continuity. Once a character is established on a certain side of the shot, the camera can only stay on the same side of the line as it can disorientate the viewer if you change it by making the characters appear on a different side. You can only cross the line if you show the camera movement.  If the characters switch positions at any point during the shot you need to re-establish and orientate the viewer to the right place by showing a wide shot.
This video helped me understand what the 180 degree rule within making a film is and how it works.
